Action: Monday 17th March and Tuesday 18th March 2014 from 9 am.
Place: East Side Gallery, 10243 Berlin-Friedrichshain, Mühlenstraße
(right next to the Oberbaumbrücke.)
On the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the East Side Gallery work "Vaterland" (Fatherland), the 24th anniversary of the first democratic elections in the GDR and Günther Schaefer's 60th birthday on 19th March 2014.
The background to this action:
Between 16th and 18th March 1990, the work "Vaterland" was created in a three-day action and on 18th March 1990, the day of the first and last free elections in the GDR, it was first publicly presented as a symbolic "gift to freedom".
The work "Vaterland," near to the former border crossing Oberbaumbrücke, was the first work of art to be completed at East Side Gallery developing at that time at the Berlin Wall and thereby wrote wall history, as in those days it was still an absolute novelty to be able to fashion the wall artistically from the east side. "Vaterland" is probably the most provocative contribution to the East Side Gallery, Since 1990, this painting has been destroyed 46 times by fanatics of all colours. The artist replies again and again with renovations, as a form of non-violent opposition.
On the occasion of this anniversary, the artists will set out to renovate the work in a joint action, also to set a sign of international understanding.
