L’exposition « La Poste des Artistes » a pour but de montrer aux visiteurs que La Poste peut être une source de création et une source d’inspiration pour les artistes contemporains.
Musée de La Poste in Paris, France, is presenting these days the exhibition "La Poste inspire des Artistes".
The works of about 50 contemporary artists are being displayed, among them: Joan Miró, Yves Klein, Marcel Duchamp, César, Arman, Christo, Joseph Beuys, Arman, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Man Ray.
The exhibition presents Varda Carmeli's artwork which has been part of the museum collection since 2002.
Varda Carmeli - The traditional Mail facing modern means of communication – The old in the face of the new.
The age-old mailing system preserves its important and necessary status and representation despite the modern and most sophisticated innovations in the communications media, which include facsimile devices, electronic mail and other means of communication.
In this work I have created a connection between tradition, on the one hand, and modernization on the other.
I have impressed strips of used carbon paper from the facsimile telephone at my house, on which it is possible to see the written material that I have received. I believe that a representation of electronic mail – the Internet etcetera is expressed in this element. A large amount of information reaches us, accumulates and some times results in disinformation.
I used the postbag that I had received from The French Postal Authorities as a representative of the historic and traditional. I granted the bag the importance and respect that it deserves by stressing the letters in royal blue on a gold background. I preserved the postbag under a Perspex sheet, as a closed treasure of the past, present and future, the traditional mail that epitomizes discretion, expectation and curiosity for the letter that will arrive, intimacy and romanticism.
Mixed Media: Carbon paper from a facsimile device, a postbag, Perspex and acrylic on canvas. 110 x 100 cm.
